4.6 Concluding Remarks

The aim of this chapter was to provide a comprehensive overview of the drivers of green behaviors. Our overview focused solely on effects for which there is empirical support. We showed that the list of determinant variables of organizational citizenship behavior for the environment (OCBE) is significantly longer than the number of drivers examined to date in relation to required green task performance and non-green behaviors. The current literature on green behaviors clearly shows that researchers are focusing their attention on pro-environmental behaviors performed by individuals on a voluntary basis. One of the implications of this is that it is difficult to identify clear trends for some OCBEs, such as the composite model, unlike cases where OCBEs are treated more homogeneously (e.g., voice, eco-initiatives, etc.). The case of OCBE contrasts markedly with required green task performance and non-green behaviors, where clear trends are apparent. This chapter provided an initial insight into the variables determining organizational citizenship behavior for the environment, required green task performance, and non-green behaviors, respectively. In doing so, it set out a range of key observations and lessons. One of the main challenges for future research is to continue investigating determinant variables, but by adopting reasoned guiding principles. In the case of OCBEs, the point is to draw on the knowledge acquired to date with a view to testing different combinations of determinant variables to detect invariances, such as in the case of composite OCBE. By contrast, further work is needed on required green task performance and non-green behaviors. Finally, while existing studies have considered two types of green behaviors (e.g., Bissing-Olson et al., 2013; Dumont et al., 2017; Norton et al., 2014; Pham, Chiappetta, Jabbour et al., 2020), at the time of writing no research taking into account all three types of green behaviors was identified in the environmental literature. Therefore, another objective should be to test more complex models to establish the extent to which these three types of behaviors share common determinants or are influenced by unique predictors.
